When thinking about your design, you may want to consider how many bays you require, and whether these will all be open or incorporate doors. Will you utilise the roof space for storage or as a fully functioning room; perhaps you’d like to add electrics and plumbing, or how about a patio area or retaining wall to add to the aesthetic? Whatever your requirements, our designers and master craftsmen are on hand to breathe life into your vision and create a cartlodge that’s just right for you.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Footprint The beauty of a completely bespoke cartlodge is that you can dictate the size, shape and dimensions. Coming away from the classic footprint of a cartlodge, you might find that an L-shape layout suits your needs better, or a different configuration of bays. Perhaps an exterior staircase will give the character you’re looking for, or barn style doors for practicality and traditional styling. Moreover, you might choose to add height to your build with a second storey, creating useable space as a workshop, office, playroom or guest accommodation. The possibilities are endless.

Roof style Although generally dictated by the way you’d like your cartlodge to look and synergise with your existing buildings, you might also consider your choice of roof style to include a loft storage space, or to be under a certain height in order to avoid planning restrictions.

Aesthetics At Stour Valley Oak, all our frames are made entirely from solid oak, meaning you can be assured of quality right throughout your lodge, as well as a truly traditional finish, which can be admired both internally, with its exposed beams and hand crafted joins, and also from an external aspect.

As well as being imperative to the structure, customers often comment on the look of the traditional oak braces on our cartlodges, and the charming appearance of our staddle stones; a century’s old tradition to elevate the frame from the ground, thus protecting it from the elements. Combining these time-honoured aspects with your own personal styling such as roofing materials, door style, lighting and hard landscaping, means you’ll have a cartlodge that’s truly unique and marries perfectly with your property.

Storage Another consideration is the option of an outshot or aisle. A useful solution for enclosed storage, an aisle can be fitted with an interior door so it can be accessed from inside the cartlodge, making it an ideal space for storage or even a cosy workshop. An outshot, on the other hand, is left open to give a traditional aesthetic, perfect for creating rustic appeal as log storage and offering a practical solution for accessible, open storage.

A great option if you’d like to use your own tradesmen, a self-build kit gives you the flexibility to take on your own project.
Our supply-only service means we’ll source and cut the timbers for your project in our specialist workshop, then deliver them directly to site.
