OUR ONE BAY CART LODGES
At Stour Valley Oak, our Hambling range of one bay cartlodges is a consistently popular option. The ideal solution for parking, storage or working beneath, a one bay cartlodge sits just as comfortably aside a period cottage as it does a contemporary home or country estate.
Like the renowned works of their namesake artist (most notably the steel Scallop on Aldeburgh beach), our one-bay cartlodges offer both style and prestige. Echoing the sentiment of Maggi’s ability to use her craft to create a striking and solid sculpture in synergy with the landscape, our timeless one bay cartlodges are not only practical but also beautiful, making them a fantastic addition to any home.

THE HAMBLING RANGE
NEED HELP WITH SOME OF THE TERMINOLOGY?​

While browsing our cartlodge range, you may find these definitions useful.
Barn hips A small hip roof detail to create symmetrical slopes on both ends of the roof. Sometimes also referred to as a Gambrel.
​
Gables The intersections between the gable end wall and the roof, which are generally triangular in shape.
Braces The structural supports between a vertical post and horizontal beam, installed with mortice and tenon joints and oak dowels. 
​
Sole plate The horizontal timer base laid on the brick plinth, on which the vertical posts and studwork are built.
​
Rafters The sloping beams that form part of the internal framework of a roof.
​
Featheredge boarding Single boards that are placed with each one overlapping the next.
​
Protim An organic-based preservation treatment for wood.
​
Staddle Stones Traditional granite or sandstone plinths used to support the oak posts that aren’t on the sole plate and brick plinth i.e. the front and rear posts in the middle of the cartlodge. The staddle stones lift the posts from the ground, protecting them from the elements.
​
Aisle An internal space, either situated to the side or rear of the cartlodge. Generally used for dry storage such as bikes, tools and garden equipment.
​
Outshot An external storage space, without walls, most commonly used as a log store.

A great option if you’d like to use your own tradesmen, a self-build kit gives you the flexibility to take on your own project.
Our supply-only service means we’ll source and cut the timbers for your project in our specialist workshop, then deliver them directly to site.
